Athens, TennesseeTexas Hydraulics - Tennessee Division is nestled at the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains in Athens. Athens is centrally located on I-75 between Knoxville and Chattanooga. It is a small town, known as the "Friendly City" where everybody knows everybody. Athens' population is approximately 15,000 with approximately 50,000 people countywide. The industry in Athens is very diversified which includes major businesses such as Mayfield Dairy Farms, Bowater Newsprint, and Denso Corporation. For entertainment, Athens provides an assortment to choose from. The Gem Players present live theatrical productions at the Gem Theatre, located in Etowah, another small town just 10 miles east of Athens. The Living Heritage Museum along with Mayfield Dairy Farms Visitors Center provides "hometown" history, art and education. The Athens Parks and Recreation have a schedule full of sports, entertainment and community programs for pre-schoolers through senior citizens, with a new Senior Citizens Center that hosts many arts and craft shows as well and dining and dancing. Knoxville, located just north of Athens, holds its annual Dogwood Festival every May, and Chattanooga located just south of Athens, hold its annual Riverbend Festival every June. Both festivals are packed with local artists, crafts, foods, and fun. The Athens City School System along with the McMinn County Board of Education, give children and young people a quality education. Tennessee Wesleyan College, a liberal arts college is located in Athens and Cleveland State Community College, a unit of the University of Tennessee is located in Cleveland, TN just 20 miles south of Athens. |
